What does Elder mean?

It is interesting to note that elder and eldest are often used before the words brother, sister, son, daughter, grandson and granddaughter. Observe the two sentences given below.

My elder brother is in the States.

My elder grandson is in college.

In both the sentences given above, you can see that the word elder is used with the two nouns, brother and grandson respectively conveying the comparative idea. It suggests that one person has only two brothers and the other person has only two grandsons respectively.

An interesting point to note about the word elder is that, it is the form we used in writing, especially in formal writing, when we are speaking about a person older than someone else.

Данный вариант считается более обобщенным и широко употребляется как в контексте указания возраста в сравнении, так и в ряде абстрактных ситуаций. Приведем в пример несколько предложений:

Кроме того, это форма нередко используется в случаях, когда речь идет людях преклонного или пожилого возраста в официальной речи или разговоре о неких абстрактных понятиях.

Одной из причин является то, что нет такого слова eld, которое бы служило основой для elder и eldest; более разумным кажется отталкиваться от слова «old» и образовать слова older и oldest. (в английском языке, однако есть и другие сравнительные/превосходные формы, у которых нет соответствующей основы: better и best происходят от good, а worse и worst от bad.)

Более значительным является грамматическое ограничение elder. Мы можем сказать “She has an elder sister” и “She is the eldest of the two”, но мы не можем сказать “He is elder than John” (запрет абсолютно нелогичен, но он есть). Что касается второго слова, то мы можем сказать “She has an older sister” и “She is the oldest of the two,” и “He is older than John” также считается правильным.

Еще одним ограничением является тот факт, что elder и eldest применимы только к людям, а older и oldest могут касаться и людей и неодушевленных предметов. Также, хотя elder и eldest могут относиться к возрасту людей в пределах семьи, они не применяются в других социальных контекстах.

Elderly представляет собой как прилагательное, так и существительное (“the elderly”), хотя некоторые считают его потерявшим свое значение и предпочитают older или senior.

Толковая статья, но не соглашусь с тем, что не существует слова «Eld». Оно есть, но СИЛЬНО устарело. Открываем словарь (пользовался Lingvo Universal)и читаем следующее: eld I 1. 1) старость; пожилой возраст 2) древность, старина, былое 2. 1) старый; старческий 2) давнишний, старинный; бывший, прежний, былой II болеть, беспокоить, мучить; причинять боль, страдание

Добрый день. Мне задали «хитрый вопрос! — а как правильно сказать «старшая жена»? Ведь если по «рангу»)))и функциям — то main, а если по семейному — elder? ведь выбор главной жены определяется не возрастом? Буду благодарна за помощь)))

What does Older mean?

The only main difference between the two usages older and elder is that the word older is a bit more informal than the word elder. Look at the following examples.

My older brother is in the States.

My older grandson is in college.

In both of the sentences given above, the word older just like word elder gives the meaning of someone older than the speaker. However, this word older is accompanied when we are speaking. As mentioned above, older is more colloquial. Sometimes the word older is used in the sense of ‘advanced by age’ and hence gives a suggested meaning as in the sentence given below.

My older sister lives in England.

In this sentence, you get the idea that the sister is advanced in age and is no longer young in age. Of course, this is a special usage of the word older. Otherwise, it is used only as a substitute for the word elder.

‘Elder’ or ‘Older’?

The words “elder” and “older” are both used to describe a person who is advanced in age compared to someone else. However, there are some important differences between these words that you should be aware of.
